Category Definitions

 

Canadian digital publishers—including those that support established brands in consumer & B2B magazines, newspapers, broadcast and other journalism, as well as those that serve their audiences exclusively as digital brands—are eligible to participate, including those that publish in either English or French.

 

The inaugural year of the Digital Publishing Awards (DPAs) program proudly announcing a roster of 14 categories.   

 

Awards will come with a cash prize of $100 for Silver winners and $250 for Gold winners. There will be no cash prize for categories 11 to 14.

 

  1. Best Digital Editorial Package

Honours the outstanding and collaborative work of an editorial team—editors and content creators—in creating an original series of related or thematic editorial content that best serves its intended audience by maximizing the potential of digital publishing. The quality of the writing as well as the value to readers will be judged.

 

  1. Best Blog or Online-Only Column

Honours the blog or online-only column that best serves its intended audience through commentary, opinion, reportage, visual and/or audio elements as well as interactive features. Columns or blogs with multiple authors are admissible provided the column has a unifying voice or theme.

 

  1. Best News Coverage of a Single Topic or Event

Honours excellence in news reporting based on the enterprise and skill of the reporter or team of reporters, including insightful analysis and compelling narrative. This award will go to the digital publication that best serves its audience through timely, original reporting on a single topic or event.

 

  1. Best Online-Only Short Feature

Honours the best online-only short feature story (maximum 1000 words) in terms of the overall quality of writing, including but not limited to reporting, personal essays, criticism, reviews and other non-fiction genres. The feature must have been written for a digital platform. Repurposed content is not allowed.

 

  1. Best Online-Only Long Feature

Honours the best online-only long feature story (minimum 1000 words) in terms of the overall quality of writing, including but not limited to reporting, personal essays, criticism, reviews and other non-fiction genres. The feature must have been written for a digital platform. Repurposed content is not allowed.

 

  1. Best Online Video

Honours creative excellence in the production of video by a digital publisher. Videos may be informative and/or entertaining, and all genres (e.g. breaking news, documentary, how-to, humour, etc) are admissible. The video must have been produced for a digital platform.

 

  1. Best Multimedia Storytelling in a Single Feature

Honours the outstanding use of interactivity and multimedia in the coverage of a subject or event. The feature should make the best use of select multimedia elements that serve the story and engage the intended audience, including but not limited to sound clips, photography, illustration, infographics, animation and text. 

 

  1. Best Use of Data

Honours innovation in a project that leverages relevant data using data-driven technology and design (graphics, trend analyses, interactive tools) to enhance the storytelling. The assessment and presentation of data as well as the value and relevance of the visual elements will be judged.

 

  1. Best Podcast Series

Honours the podcast series that best serves its intended audience. The originality of the theme and the quality of production will be judged.  Submissions must consist of 3 episodes.

 

  1. Best Visual Storytelling

Honours the outstanding use of design and visual elements to tell a story on a digital platform, including but not limited to photographs and photo essays, illustrations, graphic design and graphic narratives.

 

  1. Best Digital Design

Honours the digital publication with the most successful and original overall combination of visual and graphic design elements with functionality and user experience.

 

  1. Best Use of Multiple Platforms

Honours the publication that most efficiently and innovatively utilizes multiple digital platforms to enhance user experience and maximize audience engagement. This award will recognize excellence in coordinating at least 4 different platforms. Platforms may include websites, tablet editions, mobile apps, social media channels, blogs, podcasts, etc.

 

  1. Best Digital Initiative

Honours an innovative digital creation, design or concept.  May include a tool, an application, a package, a social media campaign, etc., which enhances audience engagement and/or user experience. Entries in this category may not be entered in any other category.

 

  1. Digital Publication of the Year

Honours the publication that most successfully fulfills its editorial mandate, represents the highest journalistic standards, and effectively serves its intended audience by maximizing the possibilities afforded by the medium of digital publishing. Eligible publications include digital properties of magazines, newspapers, broadcasters and B2B publications, as well as online-only publications, web or tablet.
