
Internships are a fantastic way to kickstart your career in the Canadian magazine and digital publishing industry. If you are a student looking for a place to complete your internship/co-op requirement or are a budding journalist trying to get your foot in the door, here are some opportunities that you may want to apply for.
AlbertaViews
Alberta Views doesn’t offer any specific recurring internships but are open to expressions of interest from students or recent grads.
Requirements: The potential intern would need to be currently enrolled in a program or have graduated within six months.
Time Commitment: The time commitment is preferably full-time but we would consider part-time.
Compensation: The position is paid at a wage of $15 per hour.

Broadview
About the Position: The intern will have the chance to pitch and write stories, participate in editorial meetings, copy edit articles, fact-check features, proofread layouts and create digital content.
Requirements: The person needs to be under 30 and enrolled in a program at the time of application, though it’s okay if they’ve graduated by the time the internship starts.
Time Commitment: Full-time, 12 weeks
Compensation: Paid ($7,200 for 12 weeks)
How to Apply: We post the position in early January and hire in mid-February. The start date is usually sometime in May.
Canadian Living
About the Position: Canadian Living has various internship opportunities including Editorial Intern, Copy/Research Intern, Style Intern, Home Intern, and Test Kitchen Intern.
Requirements: Only students in an academic program requiring internship or co-op experience to graduate will be considered.
Compensation: Unpaid

Canadian Geographic: Editorial Intern
About the Position: Editorial interns will be expected to attend Canadian Geographic story meetings, planning sessions, news meetings, some online events and some larger company-wide meetings. Interns will: contribute story ideas, write stories for the magazine and website, as directed by the editors, fact-checking, research.
Requirements: You must be currently enrolled in a journalism program recognized by Canadian Geographic. Consult your college or university. You must be entering your graduating year or currently in your graduating year. An internship must be a program requirement.
Compensation: Unpaid

CBC: Journalism Internship
CBC has various Internship opportunities. Not all placements are available in all periods. Check their internship page for current opportunities.
About the Position: Interns spend six consecutive weeks on a full-time basis at CBC/Radio-Canada. Full-time means not trying to juggle studies and employment while undertaking an internship. Freelance work is permissible in certain cases.
Requirements: You must be currently enrolled in a Journalism program recognized by CBC. Consult your college or university. You must be entering your graduating year or currently in your graduating year. Internship must be a requirement for graduation. You must not have already interned in an editorial role at the CBC. You must be recommended in advance by your program coordinator.
Cottage Life: Content Intern
About the Position: Produce, edit, and curate print and digital content including video. The successful candidate will work closely with the editorial team and learn the ins and outs of content creation in a fast-paced publishing environment.
Requirements: Blue Ant’s policy is to only take on students who require an internship/placement by their school program. Interns are taken throughout the year.
Compensation: The positions are unpaid, but an honorarium at a rate of $25 a day is offered.
Time Commitment: Can take students part-time or on a full-time basis, virtually or at their office in downtown Toronto. Accommodations can also be made for part-time work if need be.

Fashion Magazine: Editorial Intern
About the Position: Editorial Internship in either Digital, Fashion or Beauty.
“Job responsibilities and daily duties include assisting editors with print, digital and all-around functioning of the magazine including processing invoices, administrative tasks, phone reception, attending daily news meetings and more.”
Requirements: Must be in a school program requiring an internship or co-op placement
Compensation: Unpaid
Time Commitment: 3 days a week, Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm

Prairie Fire: Practicum in Publishing, Leadership and Communication
About the Position: The position is from September to May, 3 hours per week.

PRISM: Editorial Assistant
About the Position: Editorial Assistants will be credited in the PRISM masthead and receive copies of the magazine. Editorial Assistants will be mentored by the editors and can choose to focus on specific projects such as contests, community outreach, prose editing, or poetry editing and selection.
Compensation: This is a volunteer opportunity.
Time Commitment: 1-3 hours per week.

The Walrus: Editorial Fellowship
About the Position: The Walrus editorial fellowship program encompasses the editorial fellowship and senior editorial fellowship. We hire for the editorial fellowship twice per year (in the spring and fall) and for the senior editorial fellowship once per year (the next hiring period will be spring 2023). These fellowships are primarily about fact-checking the journalism of The Walrus, but fellows are also trained in other aspects of magazine journalism and participate in editorial meetings. The senior editorial fellowship, in addition to the duties of an editorial fellow, also assists in the mentoring and training of the other fellows. Twenty-Two Media: Editorial Internship
About the Position: The position will support the editorial team with a variety of tasks. These include:
- Researching and pitching for print and digital articles
- Assisting with all areas of the business including events, video shoots and photoshoots
- Opportunity to develop story ideas
- Writing copy for print and digital mediums
- Drafting social media posts
- Working with the editorial team to increase social media engagement
- Liaising with PR and contacts to secure assets for stories and photo shoots
- Assisting with fact-checking
- Opportunity to represent the brand at relevant food, drink and travel-related events, launches, dinners etc.
Requirements: Must be currently enrolled in a program that has an internship component.
Time Requirement: Time commitment depends on how long the successful candidate’s internship course is (240 hrs, 140 hrs, etc.)
