Reduced entry fees help independent writers, illustrators, photographers and art directors submit their own work to the awards.

The discount applies to your first two entries only. Additional entries are charged at the regular rate. Select the option that matches your total number of entries; the two options cannot be combined.
The two-entry option can be used in any of the Foundation’s awards programs: the National Magazine Awards, Digital Publishing Awards or National Magazine Awards: B2B. Check each program’s deadlines.
Who qualifies
You must meet both conditions:
- You are not a staff member of the publication whose work you are submitting.
- Your byline appears on the work as its writer, photographer, illustrator or art director.
This support is for individual freelancers submitting their own work. Regular entry fees apply when a publication or staff member coordinates and pays for submissions, even if freelancers created the work.
How to apply
- Submit your entries through the awards submission portal.
- At the payment stage, select “Freelancer Support Fund.”
- Once your request is approved, you will receive a revised invoice showing the discounted fee by email within 24 hours.
About the fund
The NMAF is a registered charity. Entry fees from publishers and organizations help operate the awards and fund accessibility initiatives, including support for independent creators.
CBC News has contributed cash prizes won by its employees at the Digital Publishing Awards to the fund.
